IACM BOOK PROJECT 2009

Theme: FUNDAMENTALISM
Sub-Themes: Secular, Atheistic, and Religious Fundamentalism

There is a growing need to understand the emergence of fundamentalist groups and ideologies that assume different secular, atheistic and religious fundamentalist molds with its conceptual and existential expressions.  In other words, fundamentalism is a current movement and phenomenon that is slowly changing contemporary society’s world-view.  One cannot easily dismiss fundamentalism as a trivial matter.  The truth is that it is silently gaining ground not only among some unknown groups that rebel against the present cultural and social system of the world but also among intellectuals who think that fundamentalism is an integral part of a ‘clash of civilizations’ in our global world.

Fundamentalism becomes a context for understanding the mission of the Church today.  More than a simplistic appraisal, one has to understand more deeply the roots of fundamentalism in order to find a Christian missiological optic that sees fundamentalism as a challenge to Christian mission and as an opportunity to engage in re-thinking missionary existence for men and women today.

PURPOSE

The IACM Book Project, the first of a series of IACM studies, aims at putting together articles on atheistic, secular and religious fundamentalism.  This volume hopes to propose an initial reading and conversation about this movement and phenomenon and to provide readers and researchers a common framework for engaging in dialogue with its proponents. Also it hopes to offer a platform for discussion and exchange of insights among missiologists and other disciplines.

It is highly recommended for authors to choose one of the sub-themes for a more specific discussion of the subject matter.  However, one may discuss all the sub-themes provided that the presentation takes into account with rigor their nuances and also their value to missiological reflection.
